The Brewery Hemel-en-Aarde – Our Story

It really was a case of the property suiting an opportunity. Function following form.
During 2016, Marc de Maudave Bestel identified 5 Village Lane in the Hemel-en-Aarde Village as a good business venue and approached a local estate agent to negotiate with the then owner Neville Metodes. It was noted that there was a gap in the market for a brewpub – brewery (Micro)/restaurant in a tourist area and that parking was a major barrier to developments of this nature.

Having no knowledge of brewing Marc approached a local brewery to take on the brewery part of the development while he concentrated on the restaurant side. Building /
drawings / Construction / Certification’s Protest / load shedding and fires.

We opened for business in December 2018 with a brand-new building, staff, and operational equipment in the high season. A baptism of fire. Being at the entrance is the world-renowned Hemel-en-Aarde Wine route, the concept interior design was to get a winery styled brewery look and feel.  Our product offering is based on craftsmanship from raw materials and our finishing materials needed to craft.

The equipment was sourced through Drink Tec 2017 in Munich, Germany, where the aim was to identify a Chinese manufacturing for German beer brands. A state-of-the-art 20hl brewhouse system was procured and imported. An interior design company was commissioned to provide a story board and quotation. Budget constraints forced us to do our own interior design and interior fit-out.

Whale Crier & The Brewery Hemel-en-Aarde Hermanus is home to the first and only Whale Crier in the world. Every year at the start of summer, he uses his kelp horn to call whale watchers to one of the most breathtaking sights on our Atlantic shores: the ocean’s giants at play. Hermanus is home to THE BREWERY situated at the entrance of the world-renowned Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, on the doorstep of Hermanus.  Inspired by the traditions of the local village, the Whale Crier is synonymous with The Brewery’s brand of locally crafted beers, namely, Hermanus™ Lager, Hermanus™ Pale Ale, Hermanus™ Irish Stout, Hermanus™ Wiess, Pilsner™ and Hermanus™ India Pale Ale™.
